First request for Supplementary International Search

At the beginning of July, Nordic Patent Institute received its first Supplementary International Search (SIS) request.

The SIS is a new service under the PCT system. It gives PCT applicants the option of requesting supplementary searches from participating International Search Authorities (ISA) in addition to the main PCT search, thereby reducing the likelihood of new prior art being found in the national phase.

The SIS came into force on 1st January 2009 and Nordic Patent Institute was one of the first ISAs to offer SIS services from the start.

The demand for Supplementary International Search Reports (SISR) has been very limited so far. According to WIPO, one of the reasons could be the limited number of SISAs. Although this might be one of the reasons, a new opportunity like this needs time to be fully integrated into companies' patent processes.
