New Horizons in Green Technology - how the Nordic countries are leading the way

The importance of Green Technology has become increasingly significant in a geopolitical sense, with countries around the world focusing their efforts on sustainable energy and reducing carbon emissions. The member states of Nordic Patent Institute, - Iceland, Denmark, Norway - are at the forefront of this movement. These nations are powerhouses when it comes to Green Technology, having made significant strides in advancing sustainable energy and reducing carbon emissions.

All this innovation has significantly enhanced the competences of our national patent offices which perform all our search and analysis, within these technology areas. Vast efforts have been taken in the last few years to accommodate the latest technologies in green tech. This includes reorganization to adapt to converging technologies plus acquiring specific search tools and databases for this purpose.

Denmark is a long-time world leader in production of wind energy percapita for decades, and their innovations in wind technology have paved the way for more efficient wind energy production. n February 2021, the Danish Government approved plans for the biggest construction project in Danish history, namely an artificial island in the North Sea linking hundreds of wind turbines to deliver electricity for approx. 10 million households.

Norway has for descades been one of the leading countries in the development and use of hydroelectric power. Nearly 99% of all the energy produced in Norway comes from hydroelectric power plants. The country is now making massive efforts to reduce carbon emissions through innovation in areas such as production of hydrogen and ammonia, battery technology, and carbon capture/storage. Norway is also one of the world's largest producers of solar grade silicon and silicon solar cells.

Iceland is the world's largest green energy producer per capita and largest electricity producer per capita. Geothermal energy provided about 65% of primary energy supply in Iceland and Icelanders have been leading in the development of geothermal energy production technology, spearheading large geothermal projects in China, Eurasia, and East-Africa. Icelandic companies are also at the forefront of carbon capture and subsurface storage technologies.
